NOLDEN Mould Expert: portable hot-runner tester that checks every mould pin in a minute

7 September 2026 Barrels and screws Wermaly

A faulty heater or thermocouple in a hot runner is usually tracked down with a multimeter, pin by pin – on a 24-pole connector that means dozens of measurements and plenty of room for error. The NOLDEN Mould Expert from our supplier Nolden Regelsysteme GmbH does it for you: connect the mould connector, press a button and see what is wired to each pin and in what condition on the display.

What the Mould Expert is for

The Mould Expert is a compact mould tester for the electrical components of hot runners. It checks the wiring of any 24- or 16-pole mould connector, identifies the individual elements (heater or thermocouple) and shows their operating status and characteristics. It also detects a short circuit of any pin to ground. The result is shown on a large colour touch display and can be downloaded as an Excel file via USB.

The device is battery-powered, so it can be used anywhere – at the press, in the toolshop or in the mould store, without a socket and without a control cabinet.

How it works

The Mould Expert is a fully automated multimeter. It measures every connector pin against every other pin and against ground. When it recognises a thermocouple or a heater, it draws an electrical symbol between the relevant pins – directly on the image of the selected connector. In the event of a short to ground, a line runs from the affected pin to the earth symbol.

All results can also be shown as a table: for a heater, in addition to the symbol, the resistance (Ω) and power (W, A, calculated for 230 V) are given. You export the table at the push of a button as a CSV file for Excel via the built-in USB connector – ideal for a mould inspection report or a warranty claim.

What sets the Mould Expert apart

Automatic check

  • checks all components wired to the connector at once,
  • distinguishes heater, thermocouple and short to ground,
  • up to 24 measuring channels + ground.

No socket needed

  • two 18650 batteries, about 6 hours of runtime,
  • charging with a standard USB-C charger,
  • usable far from the mains supply.

16 or 24 poles

  • standard adapter for a 24-pole or 16-pole industrial connector,
  • further adapters (e.g. 16-pole narrow series) on request.

Clear output

  • graphical or tabular display on a 7" touch screen,
  • export to Excel (CSV) via USB,
  • ready-made data for a mould report.

Design

The measuring electronics and the high-contrast 7" touch display are housed in a rugged portable plastic case made of anthracite ABS. The device weighs just half a kilogram, so it can be carried by hand throughout the plant. One 24-pole or, alternatively, one 16-pole connection cable 1.5 m long is included in the delivery; further cables are available on request.

When it pays off

  • Acceptance of a new or repaired mould – a single measurement confirms that all heaters and thermocouples are on the correct pins.
  • Fault finding at the press – the controller reports a zone error; the Mould Expert shows in a minute whether it is a broken heater, a thermocouple or a short to ground.
  • Regular maintenance and mould storage – the exported resistance table is a reference against which the condition after a year of operation can be compared.
  • Warranty claims and service – the Excel report is unambiguous proof for the hot-runner supplier.
